Following the success of the first ‘Power of Aluminium’ Awards and the ‘Young Designer Challenge’ in 2008, the Aluminium Extruders Association with support from the Aluminium Federation organised a new competition, aimed specifically at student designers and engineers.
The competition winners were awarded with their prizes of £1000 and £500 and trophies by Baroness Gardner of Parkes, who is the Vice-Chair of ALFED's (The Aluminium Federation) All-Parliamentary Group.
Grant Riley of Nottingham Trent University won first prize for 'Clothing Management', a series of designs for a coathanger system for use in hotels.
The judging panel was chaired by top furniture designer Rodney Kinsman of OMK Associates Limited and also the director of the London Design Museum, Deyan Sudjic.
Grant's ‘Jewellery’ entry was also Highly Commended by the judges. His designs included niche market laser-cut rings and other jewellery.
Baroness Gardner hosted the ALFED annual Parliamentary Lunch in the House of Lords on Wednesday 7th July 2010 attended by Members of both Houses of Parliament, senior members of the UK Aluminium Industry and representatives of other Trade Associations. The awards were presented to the winner Grant Riley of Nottingham Trent University and runner-up Nicholas Camilleri of London South Bank University, during the lunch.
