A brighter outlook with the Lumie Brightspark

Low set-up costs, aesthetic finish and high strength to weight ratio are all reasons cited for the use of aluminium in a new lightbox designed to help sufferers of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Dull Winter months can bring on the blues, leaving people feeling tired and lethargic. Not surprisingly, many people feel down and less active. Europe’s leading specialist in light therapy, Outside In, has created the Lumie Brightspark to help alleviate those depressing days.

In a survey of 1060 adults conducted by the charity Mind, they found that during Winter months 35% of people were more likely to feel depressed or anxious, 45% felt like hibernating and 53% aged between 16-24 say they tend to eat more. These are general symptoms of SAD along with concentration problems, insomnia and lethargy. The use of the Lumie Brightspark can benefit up to 85% of sufferers.

The Lumie Brightspark was created by the innovative product design company Product Resolutions Ltd and is a stylish, bright fluorescent light tube in an anodised aluminium casing. Aluminium reduces the risk of corrosion and is high in strength whilst light in weight, meeting the demands of the designer for a portable product.

Also important in the material selection process was aluminium’s aesthetic qualities. Paul Robbins, Director of Product Resolutions, comments: “Anodised aluminium extrusion was selected for its fine quality and durability, resulting in a high end product. It is also economically beneficial as the setup cost is low and having the product assembled in the UK ensured a fast supply. I am happy with the design and finished product.”

Using the Brightspark helps to avoid drops in productivity due to SAD. Low levels of serotonin in the brain are responsible for causing depression and the rate of production for serotonin levels is directly related to duration and intensity of exposure to sunlight. Consequently the Lumie Brightspark is highly effective in treating the problem. Bright light also helps pregnant women with depression and light therapy is one treatment option offered by NHS and SAD Specialist Clinics.
