Adjustable Sorting Fitting
Adjustable Sorting Fitting Adjustable sorting table leg developed by ROMEC.

Background

Aluminium extrusions have helped to improve the design of an adjustable table leg which is a component part of a height adjustable, mail-sorting fitting used by postal administrations throughout the world.

The fitting is manufactured by ROMEC (the manufacturing and engineering arm of the Royal Mail) and has been produced primarily for the postal services in Norway and Canada.

Solution
The leg had originally been made as a three-piece steel fabrication and was resource-intensive in its manufacture.

In contrast, the extruded section is supplied as a single. finished component which eliminates the need for additional fabrication and has a much more pleasing appearance yet still retains the structural integrity of the original design.
  Benefits
Being a single-piece component, the aluminium extrusion does away with the need for any further fabrication, allowing vital manufacturing resources to be utilised elsewhere.

The use of an extruded - rather than solid - component has also exhibited a cost-saving of approximately 20%. Compared to the original steel component, the new aluminium section showed an overall saving of 65% in weight - an important consideration when over 100,000 pieces may have to be exported.
