Specialist Structures design and manufacture permanent and semi permanent aluminium buildings. Clients include schools, local councils, race courses and many event and exhibition related companies. The company’s main product is the SPACE building system - a construction system which uses pre-designed aluminium components to create impressive single and multi-storey buildings used in a wide variety of applications.
The SPACE building system takes advantage of aluminium’s major attributes – the material’s strength, low density and malleability are all ideal for modular building techniques, especially where a structure is a temporary fixture. In addition, aluminium lends itself well to a variety of attractive finishes, such as powder coating, enabling Specialist Structures to offer clients the option of a building ‘branded’ in their own corporate colours or in an unusual finish.
Extruded components are assembled at the company’s Wiltshire base and the whole system is re-usable, can be re-assembled in different configurations and is ultimately recyclable. Recent structural additions to the SPACE building system have been prompted by the desire for ever more innovative, cutting edge and larger temporary space, which fulfills practical requirements, but demands more sophisticated structural engineering and techniques.
The SPACE anchor©’ (patent applied for) consists of a family of aluminium extrusions which can be used anywhere within the existing system and forms a non slip clamp which significantly increases the load limits of modular buildings. The mechanism is low cost as it relies on aluminium extrusions which require only limited machining. To date the new component has been used to build six metre truss beams, nine metre high buttresses and a range of locking devices for joining components together. The SPACE anchor© patented system can be used to create single load bearing beams with spans of up to 10 metres and complex modular load bearing floors with spans of up to 12 metres – all in aluminium.
